Investigation of a Lower Mantle Shear Wave Triplication Using a Broadband Array

چکیده

SH signals recorded by an array of four broadband (Benioff 1-90) instruments, run by Caltech, are inspected for evidence of a lower mantle shear wave velocity discontinuity previously detected using WWSSN data. Deep focus earthquakes beneath Argentina span the distance range 78 ø to 82 ø from the array, where the triplication in the travel time curve produced by the discontinuity is expected to result in an arrival between the direct shear wave, S, and the reflection off of the core-mantle boundary, ScS. The SH data for these events do show evidence of the arrival; however, the broadband signals also show significant receiver structure complexity. Empirical receiver functions are determined for each station by stacking observations for events in South America closer than 75 ø from the array. Incorporating these receiver functions into the synthetic modeling demonstrates that lower mantle shear velocity models with a discontinuity fit the observations better than models without one.

A Shear Velocity Discontinuity in the Lower Mantle

A lower mantle S-wave triplication is detected using shortand long-period SH seismograms in the distance range 70 ø to 95 ø . Modeling of the observations with synthetic seismograms indicates that the tripliGation is produced by a 2.75 • 0.25% shear velocity increase about 280 km above the core-mantle boundary. The SH data from intermediate and deep focus events for three distinct source ragion...

Investigation of the strength and trend of seismic anisotropy beneath the Zagros collision zone

The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...

Trans‐Pacific whole mantle structure

[1] Recent reports on modeling USArray data reveal mostly vertical microplates with little resemblance to preliminary reference Earth model (PREM). Such complexity at plate boundaries makes it difficult to form reliable images of ocean basins using global paths. Here, we report on modeling stacked seismograms obtained from the first broadband array (TriNet) situated on the edge of the Pacific P...

Crustal shear wave velocity structure of the western United States inferred from ambient seismic noise and earthquake data

[1] Surface wave dispersion measurements from ambient seismic noise and array‐based measurements from teleseismic earthquakes observed with the EarthScope/USArray Transportable Array (TA) are inverted using a Monte Carlo method for a 3‐D VS model of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the western United States. The combination of data from these methods produces exceptionally broadband dispe...

P and SH velocity structure in the upper mantle beneath Northeast China_ Evidence for a stagnant slab in hydrous mantle transition zone

Using high-dense regional body waves for three deep earthquakes that occurred around Russia–China border, we investigate both S and P wave velocity structures in the mantle transition zone beneath Northeast China and northern part of North China Craton, where the northwestern Pacific plate is imaged to subhorizontally lie above the 660-km discontinuity. We observe an increasing trend of S–P a v...
